*Corsario Negro* is the third full-length album by the Argentine band Los Natas, released in 2002 and firmly rooted in the stoner rock genre, with strong elements of doom metal and psychedelic, space rock-style atmospheres. The album, which appeared following the bankruptcy of Man’s Ruin Records, heralded a new phase for the band at Small Stone Records and captured their heavy, hypnotic sound in a more expansive and mature form. The music is characterised by dense, fuzz-soaked riffs, slow, heavy grooves and elaborate instrumental passages that prioritise texture and atmosphere over directness, often evoking a dark, oceanic journey, as the title suggests. The album’s production, carried out in collaboration with the renowned producer Billy Anderson, gives Corsario Negro a thick, immersive sonic character in which the bass and drums cling to monolithic rhythms, whilst the guitars explore both crushing heaviness and trippy, atmospheric spaces. Vocals are used sparingly and often blend into the mix as an additional layer of sound, reinforcing the sense of a cohesive, hypnotic whole rather than a collection of straightforward rock tracks. Within Los Natas’ discography, ‘Corsario Negro’ is widely regarded as a milestone that distils the essence of their ‘heavy psych’ approach and stands as a significant statement of South American stoner rock from the early 2000s.
