REZN’s *Chaotic Divine*, released as a 2LP in 2020, is a striking album within the doom metal genre that deliberately pushes and transcends boundaries. The Chicago-based band combines traditional stoner doom elements with characteristic heavy guitar riffs, warm basslines and effects-laden vocals, whilst ingeniously adding layers of psychedelic rock and experimental timbres. What sets the album apart is its versatile instrumentation. Alongside the familiar guitar, bass, drums and vocals, there are also less obvious instruments such as the saxophone, synthesisers, traditional stringed instruments and various percussion elements. In particular, the subtle, tasteful integration of the saxophonist enriches the sonic palette without compromising the cohesion of the music. The tone of *Chaotic Divine* is meditative, compelling and atmospheric. REZN manages to create a hypnotic listening experience that feels both familiar and refreshing to fans of doom and psychedelia. The album stands out for its balance between intensity and subtlety, a richly layered sound and strong production.
